Scott Barnett, Ph.D.
So how does one wind up making a strange podcast about how tiny molecules kill you? Glad you asked. I didn’t always plan on being a science podcaster. It wasn’t until I accepted the fact that I was never going to be an astronaut or a male model that settled into my new role as a scientist. In 2017 I received my Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology & Physiology from the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, followed by a brief stint as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and now I am back at UNR. As to the podcast? Well, I decided to create this podcast because: (1) It's a socially acceptable way to explore my low-grade narcissism, and (2) The body is this awesome and insane ball of molecules struggling against entropy, so why not share my fascination of Pharmacology with that small contingent of the world that finds this stuff interesting too. That’s the great thing about podcasts, they support the niche corners of our world!
Fun Facts About Me:
I graduated from The University of Oregon in 2000 with a B.S. in Psychology. After finishing school I took the next logical step in my education....I learned to blow stuff up...in the Marine Corps. After six years of galavanting around the world, in 2006 I left that fine organization as a Captain and set up for my next adventure; soul crushing graduate school (yay!). I was actually planning on going to med school, but as it turns out I loved the monotonous solitude of pipetting fluids from one tube to another so much that I decided that a Ph.D. was more my style.....so here we are.
In my spare time I like to take photographs. If you are so inclined you can see my work here: Scott Barnett Photography (link) . Feel free to shoot me an email if you have any questions or comments about the show. info@thepoisoncast.com
The Hiatus: Close followers of the show probably think that I’ve died or moved onto other things. In reality, I needed some “me” time during 2017 and most of 2018 in order to finish my Ph.D. (turns out it’s a fair bit of work to write a dissertation), find a new job, move across the country, and oh…..yeah…..raise newborn twins (which turns out is a fair bit more work than writing a dissertation). Long story short, “Scotty is tired,” but I think I’m ready to wander back into the breach, so look for new episodes in 2019.
